In our fast-paced world, we often think that for a workout to be "effective," it must be intense. However, true strength often comes from the ability to slow down, listen to our bodies, and move with intention.
Our Gentle Yoga classes are designed to provide a sanctuary from the noise. Whether you are recovering from an injury, managing stress, or simply looking for a more meditative practice, Gentle Yoga offers a path to wellness that honors your body exactly as it is today.
What is Gentle Yoga?
Gentle Yoga is an umbrella term for practices that prioritize accessibility, comfort, and the mind-body connection over cardiovascular intensity. It isn't just "easy yoga"—it is a mindful approach that uses modified poses and a slower pace to ensure the practice is kind to the joints and nervous system.
Under the "Gentle" umbrella, you will find several distinct styles:
- Hatha Yoga: The foundation of most modern practices. In a gentle Hatha class, poses are held long enough to find correct alignment and focus on the breath, with smooth, slow transitions.
- Somatic Yoga: This style focuses on the internal experience of movement. It uses small, conscious movements to re-train the brain-to-muscle connection, helping to release chronic tension held in the body.
- Restorative Yoga: The ultimate "napping with purpose." You use props to fully support your body in passive poses, allowing the nervous system to shift from "fight or flight" into deep relaxation.
- Yin Yoga: While Gentle, Yin can be deep. It targets the connective tissues (fascia and ligaments) rather than the muscles. Poses are held for 3–5 minutes, mostly on the floor, to improve flexibility and joint health.
What to Expect in a Gentle Yoga Class
If you are booking a livestream class with us, here is a quick breakdown of what to expect:
1. Workout Intensity
- Low. You likely won’t break a heavy sweat, but you will feel a "glow." The focus is on circulation, flexibility, and down-regulating the nervous system rather than burning calories.
2. Fitness & Yoga Level Required
- All Levels Welcome. Gentle Yoga is the perfect entry point for absolute beginners. However, it is equally valuable for advanced practitioners who need a "recovery day" to balance their more intense Power or Vinyasa practices. No prior flexibility is required!
3. Type of Poses
- Expect a mix of seated, reclining (lying down), and occasionally standing poses. You will encounter gentle twists, side stretches, and mild heart-openers. Transitions are slow to ensure no one feels rushed or dizzy.
4. Props: Your Best Friends
Because we want the yoga to fit your body (rather than forcing your body to fit a pose), props are highly recommended. For our livestream classes, you don't need professional gear—household items work great:
- A Yoga Mat: For a non-slip surface.
- Blocks: (Or two thick sturdy books) to bring the floor closer to you.
- A Strap: (Or a bathrobe tie/belt) to help with reaching your feet.
- Bolster/Pillows: Two firm bed pillows or a couch cushion for support in Restorative poses.
- Blankets: For padding under the knees or to stay warm during the final relaxation (Savasana).
