What is Reiki: origins and practice

Developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, reiki is a form of subtle energy healing centred on the movement of universal life force energy. The word combines two Japanese terms: rei, meaning universal, and ki, representing vital energy.

In a live stream format, certified practitioners use distance healing techniques to facilitate deep energetic realignment for remote participants. Viewers rest comfortably at home in a lying or seated position while the practitioner uses focused intention, guided visualisation, and breathwork to clear subtle blockages and balance energy flow across the body without physical contact.

Who Reiki is for

Reiki is universally accessible and requires no physical flexibility, special equipment, or prior experience. Absolute beginners can use these sessions as a gentle, low-pressure entry point into holistic wellness, while advanced practitioners can integrate the sessions to deepen their existing meditation routines.

For yoga enthusiasts, reiki acts as a versatile complement across styles: dynamic vinyasa and ashtanga students gain a passive tool for muscle recovery, whereas restorative and yin devotees find an additional layer of quiet contemplation. It is equally effective for anyone experiencing burnout or fatigue.

The benefits of Reiki

  • Nervous system regulation: Shifts the body out of fight-or-flight mode to reduce physiological stress and muscle tightness.
  • Improved sleep quality: Calms an overactive mind, paving the way for easier falling asleep and deeper rest.
  • Emotional release: Assists in clearing stagnant energetic blockages, fostering emotional balance and mental resilience.
  • Holistic recovery: Complements physical exercise and yoga by supporting the body's natural energetic recovery processes.
