Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly known as tapping, is a wellness practise consisting of gently tapping parts of your own body. Think of it as a psychological version of acupuncture, but without the needles.
By gently tapping with your fingertips on specific meridian (energy) points on your body while focusing on a particular emotion or challenge, you send a calming signal directly to your brain's stress center. This unique combination helps clear emotional blocks, quiet the mind, and restore balance to your nervous system.
Because EFT is completely non-invasive and easy to learn, it is accessible to almost everyone.
EFT is celebrated because it works quickly—often offering relief in just a few minutes. Regular practice can help you:
If you can breathe and tap your fingers, you can practice EFT.
The Foundation (1980s): Dr. Callahan discovered that tapping on specific acupressure meridian points could rapidly relieve severe phobias and emotional distress. However, TFT was complex; it required highly customized "algorithms" (different tapping sequences) for different psychological issues.
The Evolution (1990s): Gary Craig recognized the incredible potential of Callahan's work but wanted to make it practical for the everyday person. Utilizing his engineer's mindset for efficiency, he streamlined the complex algorithms into one single, universal tapping sequence that could be applied to almost any issue.
Craig named this simplified, user-friendly version Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Driven by a desire to make healing accessible, he originally released his training manuals freely to the public, allowing tapping to organically grow into the global wellness practice it is today.
