David Lloyd Clubs is the leader in the UK’s premium health and wellness sector. Originally a tennis-focused club, it has evolved into a high-end "third-space" where yoga and holistic wellness are now central to the member experience.

History & Business Model

Founded in 1982 by former professional tennis player David Lloyd, the brand began with a vision for family-centric fitness. After being acquired by TDR Capital in 2013, the group underwent a massive "premiumisation" strategy.

Their business model focuses on high-value, tiered memberships. Rather than just a gym, David Lloyd positions itself as a luxury destination for families, combining elite fitness facilities with high-end spas, business lounges, and social hubs.

Global and UK Presence (2026 Data)

David Lloyd Leisure currently operates across 9 countries: UK: ~109 Clubs and Mainland Europe: ~30 Clubs (Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Italy, France, Switzerland, and the Republic of Ireland).

UK Distribution:

There are 97 clubs in England, 9 in Scotland, 2 in Wales and 1 in Northern Ireland. There are 18 clubs within the Greater London area, including the ultra-premium Harbour Clubs (Chelsea, Kensington, and Notting Hill).

The Yoga Experience at David Lloyd

Every David Lloyd club features a dedicated Mind & Body studio. Many newer or refurbished locations now include bespoke "SPIRIT" studios, specifically designed with ambient lighting and high-end soundscapes for yoga and meditation.

Booking, Waiting Lists, and "No-Show" Strikes

  • Booking: You must book classes via the David Lloyd app. Platinum/Diamond members get a 9-day advance window, while others typically get 8 days.
  • Waiting Lists: Highly popular sessions (like Sunday morning Vinyasa) frequently have waiting lists. The app uses an automated system to notify you if a space becomes available.
  • No-Show Policy: Members are allowed 3 "no-show" or late-cancellation strikes (canceling less than 2 hours before) within a 30-day period. Exceeding this results in a 7-day ban from making any advanced bookings.

Yoga Variety and Frequency

Most clubs host between 15 and 35 yoga sessions per week, ranging from early morning "Sunrise Yoga" to evening restorative sessions.

  • Types of Yoga: Vinyasa, Hatha, and Yin Yoga. Select clubs also offer Hot Yoga.
  • SPIRIT: This is David Lloyd’s signature "holistic boutique" class. It’s a 45-minute fusion of yoga, Pilates, and meditation set to a curated soundtrack.

What does it cost?

Membership pricing is localised and tiered.

  • Standard/Plus: £95 – £150 per month.
  • Platinum/Diamond: £170 – £230+ per month.
  • Most Expensive Clubs: The Harbour Club Chelsea and Harbour Club Kensington are the flagship elite locations, with memberships often exceeding £300 per month.
