November: Men Health Awareness Month. Join our Yoga for Men class on Saturday 15th November for free

This November, as we focus on men's health awareness, it's time to talk about a powerful tool that often gets overlooked: yoga. While you might associate it with flexibility or spiritual chants, yoga is a formidable practice for building mental resilience, managing stress, and sharpening your focus. It’s not about becoming a human pretzel; it’s about forging a stronger connection between your mind and body.

Men often face unique pressures that can take a toll on mental well-being. Societal expectations to be strong, to provide, and to suppress emotions can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and burnout. Yoga offers a practical, effective way to combat these challenges. It’s a workout for your mind just as much as it is for your body, helping you build strength from the inside out.

We’re inviting all men to join our Yoga for Men class for free on the 15th of November at 10am GMT. Just register below.

The Best Yoga Types for Men: Hatha, Iyengar and Ashtanga

Not all yoga is the same. For men who are worried about yoga being too much like a "dance" session, they could opt for Hatha yoga or Iyengar yoga to start with, and once a bit more advanced, Ashtanga  yoga.

Hatha Yoga: Time to Learn and Grow

Hatha yoga is an excellent option for men who want a supportive environment to build their practice. Unlike faster-paced styles, Hatha gives you the time and space to truly learn each asana (pose), allowing you to focus on body awareness and proper alignment. Classes often emphasize conscious breathing techniques, which are key for calming the nervous system and reducing stress. With its balanced approach, Hatha yoga helps men become more mindful of their bodies and breath, setting a strong foundation for both mental and physical resilience.

Why it's great for men:

  • Learn at Your Own Pace: Slow, focused instruction lets you master each pose and build confidence in your practice.
  • Enhances Body Awareness: Emphasis on alignment and movement helps you tune into your body's needs—supporting injury prevention and long-term fitness.
  • Promotes Calm and Stress Reduction: Mindful breathing and relaxation techniques help regulate the nervous system and manage daily stress more effectively.

Iyengar Yoga: The Art of Precision

Named after its founder, B.K.S. Iyengar, this style is all about precise alignment and detail. Poses are held for longer periods, and props like blocks, straps, and blankets are used to help you achieve the correct form, regardless of your flexibility.

Why it's great for men:

  • Focus on Technique: If you enjoy the technical aspects of lifting weights, you’ll appreciate Iyengar's focus on proper form. It’s about doing the pose right, not just getting into it.
  • Safe for Beginners and Injury-Prone Individuals: The use of props makes it accessible to everyone. It allows you to safely explore your body's limits and work on imbalances without risking injury.
  • Develops Deep Body Awareness: Holding poses for longer forces you to become intimately aware of how your body works. This can help you identify and correct muscular imbalances, improving your performance in other sports and activities.

Ashtanga Yoga: The Power of Discipline

Ashtanga is a highly structured and physically demanding style of yoga. It involves synchronising your breath with a progressive series of postures. You follow the same sequence of poses in every class, allowing you to track your progress and master the movements over time.

Why it's great for men:

  • Predictable and Goal-Oriented: The fixed sequence appeals to a logical, goal-driven mindset. You always know what’s coming next and can focus on refining your technique.
  • Builds Serious Strength and Stamina: Ashtanga is a vigorous workout. The constant movement and challenging poses will build lean muscle, increase your cardiovascular fitness, and make you sweat.
  • Promotes Discipline and Focus: The practice requires intense concentration to link breath with movement. This builds mental discipline that extends far beyond the mat.
